A new study ranks the Palmetto State third in the nation of number of shark attacks reported in the past decade.
The study, conducted by SafeWise, found that since 2010 there have been 38 unprovoked shark attacks on South Carolina beaches.
Just last month a tourist caught video footage of sharks circling unaware swimmers at Myrtle Beach.
Thousands of sharks swim through South Carolina waters each summer, most of them blacktip sharks moving in mass migrations up from Florida through the Carolinas.
Your odds of getting attacked, though, are still only about one in 11 million. Statistically you’re more likely to die from taking a selfie than from a shark attack.
But still, if you’re trying to stay safe, it’s best to swim with multiple people and to not go too far out from the shore.
