For years, Dallas was able to make the claim it had the tallest buildings not only in Texas, but of anywhere west of the Mississippi. However, that has apparently changed quite a bit over the years, as a new study claims some other Texas cities have finally caught up. The study found that both Houston and Austin now have a taller total skyscraper height than Dallas.
Back in 1909, Dallas was able to claim the tallest building west of the Mississippi thanks to the Praetorian Building. Over the years, several other buildings have held that distinction in Dallas, but once the Bank of America Plaza was built in 1985, the city stopped going up and started spreading out. This has led to Dallas losing the claim of the tallest skyscrapers in the state, as the 22,000 feet of buildings has been overtaken by Houston’s 30,498 feet.
According to Axios, even when combined with Fort Worth the metroplex still falls short of Houston’s total. In fact, even Austin has surpassed Dallas, as reports claim Austin will be the tallest skyscraper city in Texas by 2026. Looks like Dallas locals will have to get used to telling their fellow Texans wide buildings are way better than tall buildings.
