A San Antonio woman has been awarded $2.9 million after being burned by what her lawyers are calling “dangerously hot” barbecue sauce.
Genesis Monita and her sisters were visiting Bill Miller BBQ when she pulled into a parking space to eat her food.
According to WFAA, the lawsuit claims the BBQ sauce was so hot, Monita dropped the container that was holding it and spilled it all over her right thigh causing second-degree burns.
The lawsuit states that the Bill Miller employees were negligent when they gave her "dangerously hot" barbeque sauce, while not also providing a container that was "adequate" to contain the condiment or warning her of the temperature.
Monita’s lawyer, Lawrence Morales II, says that Bill Miller violated its policy to serve sauce at 165 degrees and served Ms. Monita’s at 189 degrees, and further violated their policies by serving the sauce in a 4-ounce plastic cup rather than Styrofoam.
A jury awarded Monita $900,000 in compensatory damages and $1.8M in punitive damages at the culmination of this week's trial last Friday.
