The adulation of receiving a $100 tip quickly turned sour for Isis Gomez, a manager at El Cacique Taqueria in Baytown, TX.
A customer left a $100 tip on a $27 bill, but scribbled across the entire receipt in marker, “April Fools Dummy, No Tip 4 You!”
Gomez told the NY Post that although the receipt was signed, she declined to charge the customer for the $100. “Just to make sure they don’t come back and claim the money, I just didn’t charge the $100,” she explained.
“It was a lot of money and since it was a joke, I wasn’t sure if I should or not. I also talked to my mom about it because she’s the boss, and she was like, ‘No, don’t charge it because we don’t want to get a claim after that.'”
After the picture was posted online, Gomez and the restaurant received a ton of calls of support, with one woman even offering to create a GoFundMe to help her reclaim the lost tip, but Gomez declined the offer.
However, business at El Cacique Taqueria has picked up due to the notoriety. “We got a little bit of business from it,” Gomez said. “I had two tables come in because of everything. They said, ‘Hey, we saw the post’ and were reposting pictures of our food.”
