PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A man was killed and a firefighter was injured in a row home fire in West Philadelphia Tuesday morning.

It happened around 6:30 a.m. at an apartment building at 44th and Chestnut streets.

Deputy Fire Commissioner Joshua McGuoirk said crews responded to reports of people trapped on the third floor.

“When fire crews arrived on location, they had fire showing from the third-floor front,” he said. “Made an aggressive interior attack, was able to knock down the fire, which allowed two occupants to escape. Unfortunately, one occupant is a victim.”

That victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

A firefighter was also injured but is in stable condition.

There were working smoke alarms in the building. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Chestnut Street remains closed between 44th and 46th streets as crews clean up and investigate.
