Earlier in his career, McGraw struggled with alcoholism, which brought his life to a screeching halt one morning when the reality of his habits hit him.
“I remember a moment when I was getting out of bed and going to the liquor cabinet and taking a big shot at 8:00 in the morning and thinking, ‘I have to wake the kids up,’” Tim shared in an interview with Esquire. “I went straight to my wife and said, ‘This is where I’m at.’ I was scared. She just grabbed me and hugged me and changed my life.”
Now, sober since 2008, Tim credits Faith’s love and commitment as a big reason for his success in his fight against alcoholism.
“I didn't know love could feel so good,” McGraw admitted, while also revealing Faith is sometimes the only one who can intimidate him.
“My wife always says, ‘You’re not scared of anything.’ I say, ‘Ehhh, one thing. I’m looking at it right now.’"
McGraw and Hill wed in 1996 after falling in love on tour that year. The couple share daughters Gracie (24), Maggie (23) and Audrey (19).
