Chesterfield County, Va. (Newsradiowrva.com) - An investigation is underway following an officer-involved shooting on Genito Road in Chesterfield County.

At around 5:30 a.m. on Thursday, April 24, Chesterfield police were on scene in the 13600 block of Genito Road investigating an officer-involved shooting. The incident took place outside the BP gas station near Charter Colony Parkway, according to police.

Police say the suspect fired at officers. Officers returned fire, killing the suspect.

"Officers received a description of the suspect. They responded to [the gas station] at 5:30 a.m., at which time they identified the subject that was involved in the previous disturbance," Police Chief Frank Carpenter said in a briefing following the shooting. "The subject produced a firearm. A shot was fired. Officers engaged and returned fire. The suspect is now deceased."

Carpenter was not yet able to say how many shots were fired.

"There was a shot fired," he said. "We can only assume, based on the incident, that the officer assumed the shot was being fired at them."

The "disturbance" call remains under investigation, he added. Police will continue to conduct the investigation while the officer is on administrative leave.
