The Atlanta Braves pitching staff has enjoyed a strong 2022 season, fueled by one of the best left-handers in the game, a savvy veteran, and the potential National League Rookie of the Year that matched another Hall of Fame pitcher earlier this week.
There is another member of the staff that has seemingly flown under the radar throughout the year, but now he may be the latest to have a season compared to a Hall of Fame pitcher.
Starting with his critical performance in the fourth game of the World Series last year, Kyle Wright has been the model of consistency for the Braves organization. Through 28 starts and 170.0 innings pitched in 2022, he has a 3.18 ERA and 165 strikeouts, but he's not getting ahead of himself.
"I've grown pretty extensively over the year," he told the media on Monday night. "Selfishly, it's exciting, but I've got to take it one pitch at a time and one inning at a time to have a chance to get there."
After four seasons of going up and down from Majors, Kyle Wright entered 2022 with just two wins in 14 career starts. Regardless, he could be the first Atlanta Brave to win 20 games in nearly two decades and would thrust him into a conversation alongside the likes of Tom Glavine.
"That is pretty good company," Snitker told the media after Kyle Wright's nineteenth win on Monday night. "We've got a couple of pitchers that are doing things this year that are in pretty good company. There are a lot of accolades being thrown around from some of baseball's greats."
Calling Tom Glavine pretty good company is probably the understatement of the century. As a ten-time All-Star and two-time Cy Young winner, Glavine is one of the elite pitchers in baseball lore. The thought that such a season could fly so far under the radar is a disservice to Kyle Wright, but also a testament to how sensational a year this team has enjoyed.
