NEW YORK (WCBS 880) — Driving on the Gov. Mario M. Cuomo Bridge and the New York State Thruway is about to become a little more expensive.

The highway's Board of Directors on Tuesday approved a 30% hike for people who pay by mail on the Thruway. The adjustment will go into effect Jan. 1, 2021.

“This is a modest toll adjustment balancing the needs for continued investment in our system while keeping tolls affordable for our motorists,” Thruway Authority Executive Director Matthew Driscoll said.

The Thruway has not had a toll adjustment in 10 years, Driscoll added.

“As we enter into a new era of modern transportation on the Thruway, it’s the right time both operationally and financially for this adjustment to occur,” he said.

The board also passed a toll increase for the Gov. Mario M. Cuomo Bridge. At the beginning of 2021, the E-Z Pass rate will increase by 50 cents to $5.25 and another 50 cents to $5.75 in 2022.

Drivers without E-Z Pass will also see two increases over the next two years, bringing the toll to about $7.50, plus a $2 monthly surcharge.

Discounts will still be available for Westchester and Rockland county residents who have their vehicle registered in one of the two counties.
