The Giants were a disaster in every sense of the word on Sunday afternoon, as the move to Tommy DeVito provided no such spark as it last year, instead seemingly having the exact opposite effect.
Big Blue’s offense couldn’t get anything going with DeVito under center in a blowout loss to the Bucs, which ended with fans booing the team and bolting for the exits well before the final whistle, and multiple players sounding off on how the team looked “soft” in the 30-7 defeat.
Brian Daboll didn’t have many answers for the performance after the game, and Gio believes the head coach and general manager may be running out of reasons to be kept around beyond this dreadful season.
“I’ve been saying that it’s always felt a little different with Joe Schoen and Brian Daboll as compared to Joe Judge, Ben McAdoo, Pat Shrumur, and that Daboll wasn’t going to let it go off the rails,” Gio said. “But for the first time in their tenure, after hearing what the players said after the game and watching that performance, now I’m not so sure.
“It’s following the same script as some of these other guys, where they have a good season and things just get worse and worse.”
John Mara wanted to stop the trend of Giants head coaches lasting only 2-3 years before being fired, and craved stability within the organization.
But this team has regressed every year under Schoen and Daboll, and Gio wonders if ownership’s patience is running out, especially as players seem to be turning on the leadership currently in place.
“Regardless of what we feel about Daniel Jones and watching him for six seasons, the way that went down pissed off that locker room,” Gio said.
“Right or wrong, guys like Dexter Lawrence and Malik Nabers and their comments about the team being ‘soft,’ those are the kind of things that get coaches fired.”
