Max Scherzer reportedly has an oblique injury, per Jon Heyman, and Tiki Barber has seen enough.
Even with the Mets comfortably in first place, Tiki is convinced the franchise is cursed, and Steve Cohen as owner has not been able to reverse that.
“After the Steve Cohen news, everyone said ‘Tiki, this is happening! Steve Cohen is doing whatever it takes!’” Tiki said to open Thursday’s show. “All of the moves he made this offseason, it made you feel like this was a different Mets.
“First week of spring training? Another [Jacob] deGrom injury. A month into the season, Francisco Lindor…he’s in a slump and can’t hit. And all of a sudden, the prized acquisition, the insurance…comes out of the game with an oblique injury, and we don’t’ know how long it’s gonna be.”
For Tiki, there has just been too many painful injuries, sudden downfalls or false prophets to deny the fact that the Mets have some type of supernatural force working against them.
“This Mets team feels cursed,” Tiki said. “You can’t buy a way out of the curse. I can’t believe it.
“Everything Steve Cohen has done has just gotten undercut in one way or another. Some of them may turn.
Francisco Lindor might start hitting…Tylor Megill might come back and be a great back-end starter.”
Tierney couldn’t believe his ears, considering the Mets are in first place, but Tiki said beneath New York’s fast start are some concerning undercurrents that could be brought to the forefront before the season is over.
“Winning righty now, it matters obviously,” Tiki said. “But what we’re talking about right now is the big picture…Scherzer is 37 years old, had the dead am last year, deGrom has a history of injuries that just won’t go away. Francisco Lindor, we’re talking about losing bat speed yesterday, for a guy that should be in his prime.”
