Aaron Boone appeared on Jomboy’s Talkin’ Yanks podcast this week, and revealed that he wanted to give Marcus Stroman the chance to voice his desire to pitch Opening Day in place of Gerrit Cole, despite his intentions being to give the ball to Nestor Cortes.
Stroman didn’t object to the choice of Cortes, and kept his spot in the rotation heading into the season. But many initially ripped the newest Yankee starter for not answering the bell, having assumed that Stroman was asked to pitch the season opener and declined.
With Boone’s new revelation, Jerry says it’s time for fans to apologize to their manager and new right hander.
“Unless he’s just lying right into the camera, he said that he never wanted to take Stroman off his routine, and from the moment he found out what happened with Gerrit Cole, he wanted to give the ball to Nestor Cortes in Houston,” Jerry said. “I would like to apologize to Aaron Boone on behalf of every idiot out here who killed him for having no stones.”
Jerry hopes it’s a lesson for fans not to immediately jump to conclusions and fly off the handle.
“We just run with things as if we’re in these meetings,” Jerry said. “And we don’t know a damn thing.”
