STERLING HEIGHTS (WWJ) - Target is planning to close a store in Sterling Heights this summer.

City officials said Wednesday they were notified this week that the Target on Van Dyke, just north of 15 Mile Road, will be closing effective June 1.

Target did not give a reason for the closure.

The company said all 136 employees will be offered positions at a new store, and they expect 95 percent of those workers to continue their employment.

"The city is disappointed in the Target closure, but has no doubt the space will be quickly redeveloped given the amount of construction activity currently taking place throughout the city," Mayor Michael Taylor said in a statement. "I’m very relieved to hear the employees will be offered alternate employment with Target and no one will be left without a job."

The site at Van Dyke and 15 Mile is currently home to a number of development projects, including the new Christian Financial Credit Union headquarters, two new hotels and multiple commercial developments underway.

Another Target location in Sterling Heights, off Metro Parkway and Dequindre Road, will remain open.
