STERLING HEIGHTS (WWJ) -- A patient being transported in an ambulance died Sunday, and two other people were hurt, in a crash at a Sterling Heights intersection.
Sterling Heights police said calls came in at around 6:30 p.m. Sunday about a serious, multi-vehicle crash at Van Dyke Ave. and Metro Parkway (16 Mile Road), with a person unconscious on the scene.
According to investigators, an Aspire Health System ambulance was heading south on Van Dyke with its emergency lights and sirens activated. When the ambulance entered the intersection, it was hit by a black 2025 Jeep Grand Cherokee on the right side of the rear patient compartment.
The impact caused the ambulance to roll over before it landed back on its wheels.
Inside the ambulance were two crew members and a patient.
The 36-year-old male patient, identified as a North Branch resident, was rushed to a hospital where he later died from his injuries, police said.
The paramedic attending to the patient in the rear bay suffered moderate injuries, while the driver of the Jeep was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries, police said.
The ambulance driver wasn't hurt.
Police noted that drunk or drugged driving is not suspected at this time, although the circumstances leading up to the crash remain under investigation.
Anyone who witnessed the crash, or who has additional information, is urged to call Ofc. Porter of the Traffic Safety Bureau at 586-446-2920.
