17-year-old arrested for drunk driving crash that killed man in Shelby Twp.

SHELBY TWP. (WWJ) – A teenager is in trouble with the law after allegedly causing a drunken crash that claimed a man's life in Macomb County over the weekend.

The 17-year-old boy is being held in connection with the crash, which happened in the early morning hours of Sunday, Jan. 7 in the area of 21 Mile and Hayes Roads in Shelby Township.

The Macomb County Prosecutor's Office alleges the teen was driving under the influence of alcohol when he hit the man's vehicle. Other circumstances surrounding the crash have not been released.

The victim, whose identity was not released, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the prosecutor's office. It was not immediately clear whether the teen was injured in the crash.

On Monday Tony Goetz, Chief of the Macomb County Prosecutor's Office Juvenile Unit, requested a special adjournment at the 17-year-old's preliminary hearing to decide charges and continue to detain him in the Juvenile Justice Center.

A preliminary hearing has been scheduled for Jan. 16. Charges will be determined at that time.

"We are committed to a thorough examination of the evidence surrounding this tragic drunk driving incident. Our focus is not just on determining charges but also ensuring the safety of our community," Prosecutor Pete Lucido said.
