CANTON (WWJ) --A woman crashed an SUV into a Walmart store in Canton on Friday, injuring multiple people inside the building.

Those who were injured included a young child, WWJ's Jon Hewett reported.

Police said the incident happened at around 1:30 p.m. at the Walmart store at 39500 Ford Rd., near I-275.

According to the Canton Public Safety Department, the driver crashed through a set of doors, driving right into the pharmacy area of the store.

"I believe a woman drove through the parking lot into the building. And the vehicle is an SUV — it's a Jeep — it's about 45 feet inside the building right now," said Canton Police Chief Chad Baugh. "It looks like she drove through the service doors; it looks like doors they probably use for deliveries."

The driver and approximately five other people were injured, Baugh said. They were taken from the scene to hospitals by rescue units from Canton, Livonia, Plymouth, and Westland.

The conditions of the child and the other injured people are unknown at this time, but none of the injuries are believed to be life-threatening, according to Baugh.

"There's a lot of damage to the products inside and disarray," the chief told Hewett. "We're just real fortunate we had quick response and a lot of good Samaritans to help provide first aid and help provide support, and provide some calm."

It's unclear what led to the crash, as the investigation is just getting underway.

"At this point it's hard to say if it's medical or it's something else that caused this incident," Baugh said. "But, typically we do find these circumstances to be medical-related."

Baugh said he did not have an age any further details to release about the driver or the other injured people at this time.

The store was closed, later Friday afternoon, as police and fire units remained on the scene.
