A man accused of driving drunk is facing vehicular homicide charges after Gretna police say he killed two people in a crash. The victims in this crash, authorities say, were the grandparents of one of the Bourbon Street terror attack victims.
It happened around 6:40 p.m. Saturday on Fourth Street near Newton Street.
According to investigators, Stephan Juarez, 33, was speeding when he swerved his truck into oncoming traffic and hit an SUV head-on. Police say Juarez kept driving after the initial crash, hitting two parked cars and two people who had just stepped out of one of those cars. According to our partners at WWL-TV, those people were Hubert and Victoria Gauthreaux. Both later died at a hospital.
The driver of the car from which the Gauthreaux were emerging was not injured.
The people inside the SUV that Juarez initially hit all suffered minor injuries.
The Gauthreauxs’ grandson, Hubert, was among the victims struck and killed during the January 1 terror attack on Bourbon Street.
Juarez was treated at an area hospital before police booked him into jail. In addition to the two counts of vehicular homicide, Juarez is facing second-offense DWI, reckless operation charges, and several other charges.
